S1 Ep 2 - To School or Not to School Pt. 2
Nsima discusses his reasons for taking the route of entrepreneurship and starting a business.
Nsima speaks about using his time in college to figure out what he wanted in life. After interviewing doctors during his pre-med years, he quickly realized that he needed to figure something else out.
Sometimes in life you’ve got to take a leap, but it’s necessary to have a plan.
Figuring out my own Path?
Many high school students go to college because it’s expected of them, but that isn’t a good reason to go. If you are facing peer pressure from your parents, friends, or teachers to attend college, but you don’t feel ready, then now is not the time to go. You shouldn’t take on such a large financial and time commitment just to please other people. This is especially true if you don’t know what you want to do with your life. College is expensive, and it doesn’t make sense to spend money on a college degree if you are unsure of your path. You also risk taking extra time to finish your degree if you switch your major multiple times. You are better off waiting to attend college when you know what you want to do with your life.
Stat: Student loan debt is now equal to mortgage debt and credit card debt combined.
Furthermore, next generation employers are measuring candidates less on what degree they earned and more on portfolio or experience. “Walking into an established company wide-eyed and green with a Bachelor’s degree in business at 22 is not special, useful, or smart.”, says one Silicon Valley executive. “We need young, experienced people who have walked the walk, taken some hits, and know how to make something from nothing”, he adds.
Both Nsima and Brian are strong proponents of higher education and lifelong learning. It is advised many times in this episode that it’s a good idea to have a concrete plan before you LEAVE school and more so before you BEGIN school! In Season 1 Episode 4, Brian and Nsima talk about the Self Authoring Suite by Jordan Peterson which can help individuals figure out their goals.
